Untitled (Newspaper) 1957-62
Oil on canvas
Diebenkorn drew and painted near-at-hand things that he used and arranged. This etching is of an opened postal letter in a torn envelope near a spoon in deep, raking light. It has a familiar relationship to his painting of a folded newspaper. The etching places the cut and torn paper in high tension with the gridded, allover hatching.
He also introduced a cofactor: memory of an Edward Hopper etching.
