Ken Price
Cup from Happy's Curios, 1977
Famed ceramic artist Ken Price was also a gloriously humorous and cunning draftsman. He reveled in the lurid contradictions of sex, sunshine, and death
in land's end California and Northern Mexico. He styled drawings during the 1970s after tourist art that he and his perfectly named wife, Happy, found in Tijuana: irreverent depictions of sex and skeletons, Sequeiros's pueblos, and agave fields. His drawings appear on an album cover of Ry Cooder, a book cover of Charles Bukowski, and labels for spirits.
This lithograph is a rich example of the economical genius of his graphics.
He was a core artist of the legendary Ferus Gallery, founded by Walter Hopps. Since then, Price’s work has been extensively published and exhibited nationally and internationally. Recognition of his innovative ceramics has increased since his death in 2012.
We designed, produced, and published a book on Price's ceramics, authored
by Walter Hopps. Ken made a mixtape for us of his favorite jazz works. One
of the fascinations of Taos, New Mexico is that, while based in Venice, California, he kept a studio above the movie theater on the plaza. He was
subtle and likable.
