Scissors, 1959

This etching is of an open scissors, centered as an X shape that Diebenkorn
wanted. It lies on an open can. providing a cylinder. Grouped around are the half circle of a plate, a small container, two artist's smudge sticks, a tape measure, and a steel-tipped drawing pen. Including the horizontal edge of a tablecloth Diebenkorn had his geometry.
He painted and drew open scissors numerous times during his figurative
period (1955-1968), as with the small painting Scissors 1959, asserting its
geometry.
