Ocean Park #82 1975

As his Ocean Park series of drawings and paintings advanced Diebenkorn began introducing curvilinear variations to his rectilinear structures. The elegant etching Construct (Red) freely directs wavy curves around the picture plane. By now the late paintings of Willem de Kooning were known. Brice Marden's loopy paintings had entered into the discourse and Diebenkorn himself was making more elastic his previous Mondrian and Matisse influenced grids.
Not so well known is Diebenkorn's interest in the work of Paul Klee. This etching affirms Klee's famous comment, "Drawing is taking a line for a walk."
